What to Do When Your MT4 or MT5 Is Not Connected

Troubleshoot disconnected status, No Connection, and Invalid Account messages by checking network, credentials, exact server, software, firewall, proxy, and device factors.

Connection issues with your trading platform can disrupt your trading activities. Fortunately, most connection problems can be resolved with a few simple steps.

Checking Your Connection Status

In MT4 or MT5 desktop, check the trading-server connection indication in the lower status bar and the actual connection or login message. Read the state shown by your installed version rather than relying on a particular icon shape or colour.

  • Connected: The terminal reports a connection to the trading server. This alone does not confirm that the account may trade, that the market is open, or that an EA has permission to submit trades.

  • Disconnected or login error: Read the exact message and compare it with the troubleshooting steps below. An open chart or a previously displayed price is not sufficient evidence that the connection is currently working.

Common Connection Error Messages and Solutions

1. "No Connection" Error

If you see "No Connection" displayed near the connection indicator:

  • Check your internet connection: Ensure your device is properly connected to the internet. Try opening a website in your browser to verify your connection is working.

  • Review network protection: Check whether firewall or antivirus records show the official trading terminal being blocked. On a managed device or network, ask the administrator to verify the approved configuration. Do not turn off protection or add broad exceptions as a routine connection fix.

  • Restart your router: Sometimes, simply restarting your internet router can resolve connectivity issues.

2. "Invalid Account" Error

If you see "Invalid Account" displayed:

  • Verify login credentials: Double-check that you've entered the correct login ID and password. Remember that passwords are case-sensitive.

  • Use the exact server assigned to the specific trading account. Find it in the Client Portal or the account-creation confirmation. Do not choose a server only because it says Live or Demo, and do not copy the server from another account.

Additional Troubleshooting Steps

If the above solutions don't resolve your connection issues:

  1. Restart the platform: Close and reopen the trading platform.

  2. Prepare before reinstalling: First preserve any local templates, profiles and compatible custom programs you need. Use the current official installer from the Client Portal's Service Hub → Download Center, then reconnect with the exact account login and assigned server. Reinstallation alone does not correct an invalid account or server.

  3. Try a different device: If possible, attempt to log in from another device to determine if the issue is device-specific.

  4. Check for platform updates: Ensure you're using the latest version of the trading platform.

  5. Verify proxy requirements: If your network requires a proxy, confirm its settings with the administrator or internet provider. Do not disable an organization-required proxy or change server addresses merely to test a connection. A different trusted network can help distinguish a local network issue.

Preventive Measures

To minimize connection issues in the future:

  • Maintain a stable internet connection, preferably a wired connection for critical trading activities

  • Regularly update your trading platform to the latest version

  • Keep your operating system and security software updated

  • Consider setting up a backup internet connection for important trading sessions

Use the official platform and exact server

Sign in to the Client Portal, select Service Hub in the left navigation menu, open Download Center, and download the current MT4 or MT5 installer rather than using a third-party package. Copy the exact login number and server shown for the trading account; do not assume a generic Live or Demo server name. If the same account connects on mobile but not desktop, compare the application version, firewall, proxy and network. Trying a different trusted network can help identify whether the issue is local to the device or connection.
