The word volume can describe different things. A volume number below a price chart is not automatically the number of lots you traded, the amount of money invested, or the total trading activity of the entire market.
Chart volume and your order size
The volume entered in an order ticket is your requested trade size, commonly expressed in lots. Contract size determines the quantity represented by one lot. Your position size is an account record, while chart volume describes activity associated with a chart bar.
For example, an order size of 0.10 lots and a chart volume of 180 measure different things. Do not multiply them together or interpret 180 as 180 lots traded by you.
Tick volume and real volume
Tick volume counts the quote updates recorded while a bar forms. MT4 bar-volume data is tick volume. On a Forex chart, it describes the activity in that price feed rather than a consolidated count of transactions across the whole Forex market.
Real volume measures the quantity of executed transactions supplied by the relevant data source, for example contracts or units for an exchange instrument. MT5 can distinguish tick volume from real volume, but real-volume data may be unavailable for an over-the-counter instrument. A field or indicator option does not prove that your selected symbol supplies that data.
What do the bar colours mean?
In the standard MT5 volume indicator, green normally means the current bar's volume is greater than the previous bar's, and red means it is smaller. Colours can be customised. They compare activity; they do not identify how many customers bought or sold.
For example, consecutive completed bars showing 120 and 180 ticks indicate more quote activity in the second period. This does not, by itself, show that the price rose, that buyers outnumbered sellers, or that the next price move will be upward.
Compare the same data
When comparing volume readings, use the same complete symbol, server or data source, timeframe and period. A five-minute bar covers a longer interval than a one-minute bar, so their numbers are not directly comparable as equal periods.
The current unfinished bar is still accumulating data. Compare completed bars when you need a like-for-like historical comparison. Different feeds, server-time boundaries, available history or volume settings can produce different readings without proving that a trade record is incorrect.
If volume is missing or looks unusual
Check the selected symbol and timeframe, the connection, loaded chart history, and whether the indicator is using tick or real volume. A missing or zero value alone does not prove that there were no market transactions; an unsupported data type or unavailable history must also be considered.
Chart volume does not replace your account's orders, deals or trading history. It is also not the qualifying volume for a rebate, loyalty or Partner programme. Use the relevant account records and that programme's rules for those purposes.
Other charting interfaces
FXTRADING.com Web Trader and FXTRADING.com App may use different chart controls and data presentation from MT4 or MT5 desktop. Check the meaning of the particular indicator and its data source rather than assuming that every volume display uses identical data.
Volume is one observation about available data, not a guarantee of liquidity, execution, a future price direction or profit.
