FXTRADING.com offers eligible CFDs: you trade price changes without owning the underlying asset. This is an educational guide, not a recommendation to trade. Leverage magnifies both gains and losses.
Currency Pairs and Classifications
Currency Pair: Two currencies traded against each other (Example: EURUSD, NZDCAD)
Cross Pair: Currency pair without USD (Example: EURGBP, NZDCHF)
Base Currency: First currency in a pair (Example: EUR in EURUSD)
Quote Currency: Second currency in a pair (Example: USD in EURUSD)
Price Components
Bid is the price at which you sell; Ask is the price at which you buy. Their difference is the spread. A buy position opens at Ask and closes at Bid; a sell position opens at Bid and closes at Ask. Actual execution prices can differ from displayed quotes.
Trading Units
Volume is expressed in lots. Contract size defines the quantity or multiplier per lot for the exact symbol. A forex contract of 100,000 base-currency units per lot is an example, not a rule for every instrument.
Price Measurements
A pip is a conventional forex price unit: often 0.0001, or 0.01 for JPY pairs. A platform point and the minimum tradable tick may differ. For standard forex calculations, pip value = pip size × contract size × lots in the quote currency; convert to account currency as needed. Check the exact symbol’s definitions.
Capital Management
Leverage relates position exposure to required margin; it is not the ratio of equity to borrowed capital. Margin supports open positions. Balance reflects posted account transactions; Equity includes floating profit/loss and applicable account adjustments. Free margin = Equity − used margin; it is not necessarily the amount available to withdraw.
Profit and Loss Calculation
For a forex estimate, profit/loss = signed movement in pips × pip value for the position volume. Use closing minus opening price for buys, and opening minus closing for sells, divided by pip size. Apply account-currency conversion and relevant commissions, overnight charges and other costs. Other CFDs may use different calculation methods.
Risk Management Metrics
When used margin is positive, margin level = Equity ÷ used margin × 100%. Margin Call and Stop Out depend on the account’s current thresholds and rules. Stop Out can close positions automatically; do not rely on receiving a warning beforehand. Gaps and execution conditions can increase losses.
Before trading, check the exact symbol in Web Trader Information or MT4/MT5 Specification, and the current account margin rules. Confirm contract size, volume limits and step, tick size/value, currencies and costs.
